When I look at CNC’s values, I see them tied to the basic decency we should all expect: respect, accountability, integrity, transparency, and relationships. If we’re to succeed in our studies, careers, and lives, it’s vital for us to work with, include, and welcome others. That means bullying is a non-starter.
Pink Shirt Day is taking place on Wednesday February 22nd to prevent bullying. I welcome and encourage you to wear pink to mark the day and show your support. We will also hold activities at CNC on Monday February 27th to include students and staff who are away during Reading Break.
It’s important for the entire college community to act whenever and wherever we see bullying. For students, it’s important to reach out to an instructor and/or student services when witnessing or being involved in an incident of bullying. For staff, it’s vital to speak with a supervisor or human resources.
On Monday February 27th we will ask students, staff, and faculty to join us in making pink kites in the Prince George Campus Gathering Place. This will be a symbolic statement supporting the Pink Shirt Day theme “Lift Each Other Up”. We also will have a display on active bystander intervention skills if you see someone being bullied.
It’s important for all of us to build a friendly and caring college community that helps everyone feel welcome and included. Activities such as Pink Shirt Day will encourage all of us to lift each other up. These are part of our values, and also set the tone for our vision of learning together, changing lives, and creating futures.
Thank you.
