• What types of support can I receive with assistance from Accessibility Services?

  If requested, Accessibility Services can provide support for students with...

  • Academic accommodations as per disability documentation (eg. student note-taker, extended exam time, etc.)
  • Pursuing assistive technology equipment loans
  • Pursuing alternative format course materials (eg. Large print texts, audio texts, etc.)
  • Pursuing the use of an aid to access to CNC
  • Information regarding financial support available to students with disabilities
  • Self-advocacy support on campus
  • Referrals to other campus and community resources that may be of assistance
  • Support with planning when returning or leaving for disability related hospitalization

• I have an exam accommodation. What do I need to do?

  At CNC, exam accommodations can be provided by the Centre for Student Success. Here are the steps you need to take to book an exam:

  1. Meet with Accessibility Services at the beginning of each new semester to work with the Accessibility Services staff to draft a new letter of accommodation to your instructor.
  2. Provide your instructor with your letter of accommodation from Accessibility Services.
  3. Complete a “Request to Write” form available at the Centre for Student Success and show this to your instructor. You will need to do this one month in advance to insure a space in the Centre. Accessibility Services will confirm your exam accommodation with the Centre for Student Success.
  4. Your instructor will complete an “Exam Testing Instructions Sheet” and provide the Centre for Student Success with exam material.
  5. Come to the Centre for Student Success a couple minutes before your planned exam time.
  6. Write your test!
  7. Complete steps 3-6 for each subsequent exam you need to complete.

• How is confidentiality protected by Accessibility Services?

  Accessibility Services will make every attempt to ensure the confidentiality of students. When it is necessary to share information with college staff or agency outside of Accessibility Services, it will be disclosed only with the informed consent of the student.

  All personal information provided to Accessibility Services is kept in a confidential file and utilized to determine appropriate services. Disability Support Service may be provided with disability related information, which is required to provide requested services.

  There are specific times, although rare, when we are required to break confidentiality. These limits of confidentiality are outlined below:

  • If you are at serious risk of causing harm to either yourself or another person.
  • If there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a minor (anyone under the age of 19 years old) has been or is at risk of being abused or neglected.
  • If your Accessibility Services file has been subpoenaed by a court judge.

• Will other students in class know that I have a disability if I access Accessibility Services?

  Accessibility Services cannot guarantee anonymity around service access, as fellow students may observe you accessing services at Student Central . However, Accessibility Services will work with you and your instructor to insure your confidentiality is protected within the classroom and on campus.

  If you have an accommodation that includes a student note taker, Accessibility Services acts as a liaison with the student to protect your confidentiality. No names or disability related information is relayed to the student note-taker. Any transfer of class materials is facilitated by Accessibility Services in Student Central.

• How is the level of support determined by Accessibility Services?

  Accommodations and the level of support you require is determined by Accessibility Services. The staff at Accessibility Services determine the level of support based on a number of documents. These can include psychoeducational reports, verification of disability form, other information from medical professionals, and matrixes that determine accommodations based on disability, such as resources created by the College Committee on Disability Issues.
