Accessibility Services FAQ

• What types of support can I receive with assistance from Accessibility Advising Services?

  If requested, Accessibility Advising Services can provide support for students with:

  • Academic accommodations (documentation of disability may be required)
  • Exploring assistive technology equipment loans
  • Exploring alternative format course materials (e.g. books in alternate formats, etc.)
  • Information regarding financial support available to students with disabilities
  • Referrals to other campus and community resources that may be of assistance

• I have an approved exam accommodation. What do I need to do?

  At CNC, approved exam accommodations can be provided by the Academic Success Centre (ASC). Here are the steps you need to take to book an exam:

  1. Meet with Accessibility Advising Services at the beginning of each new semester to work with an advisor to draft a new accommodation request letter for your instructor.
  2. Book your exam date and time well in advance with the ASC
  3. Complete a “Request to Write” form available at the ASC and show this to your instructor. You will need to do this at least one month in advance to ensure your space at the ASC.
  4. Your instructor will complete an “Exam Testing Instructions Sheet” and provide the ASC with exam material.
  5. Come to the ASC a few minutes before your scheduled exam time.
  6. Write your test!
  7. Complete steps 2-6 for each subsequent exam you need to complete.

• How is confidentiality protected by Accessibility Advising Services?

  Accessibility Advising Services will make every attempt to ensure the confidentiality of students. When it is necessary to share information with college staff or outside agencies, it will be disclosed only with the signed consent of the student.

  All personal information provided to Accessibility Advising Services is kept in a confidential file and utilized to determine appropriate services.

  There are specific times, although rare, when we are required to break confidentiality. These limits of confidentiality are outlined below:

  • If College staff believe that students may be a danger to themselves or others.
  • If College staff become aware that a minor maybe at risk of harm.

  Or when a court of law subpoenas particular records regarding the student.

• Will other students in class know that I have a disability if I access Accessibility Advising Services?

  Accessibility Advising Services cannot guarantee anonymity around service access, as fellow students may observe you accessing services. However, Accessibility Advising Services will work with you and with your instructor to ensure your confidentiality is protected within the classroom and on campus.

• How is the level of support determined by Accessibility Advising Services?

  Accommodations and the level of support you require is determined by Accessibility Advising Services. Accessibility Advisors often determine the level of support required based on several supporting documents. These can include psychoeducational reports, verification of disability forms, other information from licensed medical professionals, and resources that help determine accommodations based on disability.
