Peer Academic Support
(Coming Spring 2027)
CNC is developing a new peer-led model of academic support. Trained student peers, called Peer Success Assistants, will work with students on a wide variety of subjects.
Peer Success Assistants won't just be there to answer questions. They'll create a space where students can work through problems together, connect with other students, and build community. This approach is grounded in a holistic view of learning, one shaped by local Indigenous ways of knowing and being, where academic growth is connected to relationships, community, and wellbeing rather than treated as something separate.
We're building this program based on the standards set by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), and we're working toward CRLA certification. We're tentatively planning to launch this service in Spring 2027.
In the meantime, here are some other places you can turn for academic support.
- Take advantage of your instructors' office hours to talk through your specific challenges.
- Visit the Learning Commons and connect with our librarians. They can point you to useful resources, including a LibGuide that highlights local and online options for study skills, subject review, and private tutoring.
- Consider private tutoring. This LibGuide has tips on finding a tutor, along with some options to consider.
- If cost is a barrier to hiring a private tutor, students can contact the Financial Aid Office (finaid@cnc.bc.ca, 250-561-5838). Indigenous students can also contact the Aboriginal Resource Centre (arc@cnc.bc.ca).
Testing
Testing services are available to accommodate CNC students as well as individuals writing external exams. With instructor permission, students are able to write tests and exams in our centre if they have been unable to write in class. Students with a documented accommodation are also able to write tests in our centre (contact Accessibility Services for more information).
