A prescription for change: a pharmacist’s leap into accounting

Christopher Lynch’s academic journey is anything but traditional. After 15 years working as a pharmacist, he decided it was time for a career change. Christopher followed his love for numbers into CNC’s bookkeeping program and is currently completing his Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting.

Christopher, you’re a returning student here at CNC. Tell us a bit more about your learning journey.

Yes, I’m a CNC alumnus and current student! Math was one of my favourite subjects in school and I was looking for a career that related to this and found the bookkeeping program at CNC. After graduation in 2022, I decided that I enjoyed the field of bookkeeping so much that I continued my studies at CNC to work towards my accounting diploma.

What did you do before enrolling with CNC?

I was a pharmacist for over 15 years. CNC was there for me during a difficult time in my life. I was thinking about changing careers and wondered if I would be able to succeed at going back to school after almost 20 years.

What I encountered at the College put my doubts away. During an Open House, I talked to instructors from the Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting. They took the time to answer my questions, explained how I could study part-time, and really gave me the encouragement I needed to decide to invest my time in a brand-new career. The College provides an atmosphere for success, but you have to be willing to work for it.

What has been your favourite part of your program so far?

Accounting can be a difficult program but the College, instructors, and your fellow students are there to help you succeed. The small class sizes allow the instructors to get to know you rather than being a number in the school system. They want you to succeed and they are there for you in whatever way they can to help you reach your goals.

Being in such a close-knit program, you also get to know your peers very well as you are all doing the same courses. Not only do you help each other, but you become friends that last after the program.

How is the program preparing you for your future goals and aspirations?

Professionally, the program is preparing me to start the process to get my Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. Being able to talk to the instructors and seeing how their paths brought them to the College has given me insight into the different aspects of what I could do with my CPA.

Working through the program has also allowed me to discover aspects of myself that I thought never existed: confidence, openness, the desire to help others. Whatever the future brings, whether it be getting my CPA or completing more education, CNC and the accounting program have given me the foundation to continue on and succeed.
