Introduction
What is Moodle?
Moodle is a learning management system used by CNC where your class can log in to access the course material and activities. Your instructor will inform you if they have created a Moodle course to provide online materials and activities based on the course content. If you are unfamiliar with Moodle these resources will help you understand how to use the most common features.
Logging into Moodle
Using your CNC credentials, log in to Moodle. The SAML2 link is most direct route and preferred option for most users, log in now at http://moodle.cnc.bc.ca. (Ctrl+click to open any link in a separate tab on your browser)
Bookmark your common CNC log in pages to make quicker returns.
Save passwords only on personal devices.
No Access? If you have trouble logging into Moodle using your CNC credentials please contact helpdesk@cnc.bc.ca to ensure you have an account. Your CNC credentials may not be active until two weeks prior to the start of your first semester.
Course Missing? Instructors may have set course content to not be visible until the first day of classes. If you can log in but do not see a course you are registered in, contact the course instructor to ensure you are enrolled. Instructor contact details are available from the Contacts List if you do not have it. Contact the College for help if their names are not listed.
Home Page
Your username will show in the top right when you are logged in. The home page contains general information for all Moodle users, scroll down for the links and information, particularly for LinkedIn Learning or for the Respondus Lockdown browser required for some tests and exams.
Click the drop arrow to see links to your Profile, Dashboard, and Log out among others.
Select Dashboard to see your courses. You can customize the Dashboard to show different Moodle features. When customizing, add a feature block (widget) from the bottom of the left menu.
Select Profile to see or make changes like adding your profile pic, contact info, personal message.
Preferences lists the default settings for your Moodle experience, some of these can be changed to suit your needs, like notifications.
Edit your Profile
Adding substance to your profile helps you connect with your classmates, it permits you to add a profile picture and add contact or other information that you think are important that they should know about who you are, your study habits, social media zones and anything that gives them a better understanding of who you are and what you want from your CNC education.
Keep the CNC email address in your profile unless you have instructor permission.
Save passwords only on personal devices.
Dashboard
On your Dashboard your courses are displayed. You will see Calendar and other 'blocks', depending on your screen size and device. Access the course you need by clicking the image or title. Scroll for more. Course completion percentages are also shown.

The left menu displays your courses too, and once a course is selected this menu expands to display course headings. Use the Customize this page button to rearrange the page items.
Course Activities
These are some of the common Moodle course activities used. There are various details that instructors can change for an activity but we cover the basics. If you find you are having difficulty with any activity or resource please reach out to classmates or instructor for help. Helpdesk is available for system and account issues.
Study support and advice is always available from CNC's Testing and Tutoring Services.
In CNC Moodle the action buttons are located at the bottom of the activity. Always scroll down beneath the activity area to make sure of your submission. For example posting to a forum:
Upload an Assignment
Uploading assignments has three stages, Load, Edit, Submit.
The video takes you through the simple steps beginning with selection of the correct assignment link. When an assignment is submitted you will receive a confirmation email from <noreply@moodle.cnc.bc.ca> with a link to the assignment status.
Load Stage: Submit button > find and upload doc(s);
Edit Stage: Edit loaded docs (change or add) or Submit;
Submit Stage: Tick the 'All my own work'; optional comment; Final Submit;
Exit Stage: Return to course; Receive confirmation email.
Discussions and forums
Student Services have tips on forum use and they can be used in various ways. Make sure to follow any specific instructions for the activity.
Use the cog at the top right of the thread to change subscription preferences. By subscribing to discussion threads you can be emailed about new posts or replies in the forum.
Starting Discussion Threads
The subject line in posts should reflect the key idea of the post, this helps others find and process it.
Content should be respectful and meet the requirements laid out by your instructor.
Below the message box you can add files to share with peers and don't forget to
Post to the Forum to complete the process!
Using the Editor
For those who use blogs the default editor will be familiar, you type then select the text to format it or add images and links. The basics are similar to Word or Google Docs.

Expand the ribbon for more options.

You can change the type of editor in your profile preferences, explore these settings under Edit Profile.
Support your discussions by adding headings, credited images, or links to sources on the internet. Use the formatting tools to draw attention to the heart of your main argument or point of view.
Notifications
Assignment submissions and forum posts are just two of the times you will receive notifications to your CNC email about your activity. You can subscribe to threads if you are interested in following conversations. The cog located at the top of the thread can adjust your settings.
All notifications go to your CNC email. Access this online at http://owa.cnc.bc.ca, use your CNC credentials to log in. Your email address is your username@cnc.bc.ca.
Virtual Sessions with Zoom
Zoom is a video conference and presentation software. All CNC students have access to a basic Zoom account under CNC's our Zoom license. To access any Zoom sessions
- Activate your account by signing into our Zoom site, your account will auto-create, http:/cnc-bc-ca.zoom.us/signin
- Download the Zoom client or app for your device
- Be signed into Zoom while clicking the meeting link.
The first video shows you how to sign in to your CNC Zoom account. Using the Zoom account links with Moodle features and avoids Zoom waiting rooms, if your instructor allows this.
This video highlights the various options available while in a session.
We recommend using a headset or headphones for live sessions with chat. It helps with listening and will minimize audio interference on the call. A microphone will be required for break out rooms and communicating in the session.
Virtual Sessions with Big Blue Button
Big Blue Button is CNC Moodle's internal presentation software. The first video shows you how to access the session, then the second video highlights the various options available while in a session.

Other Moodle Content
Moodle has other content available for instructors to add to their course. Moodle uses the term 'block' to refer to these items that show up on the right hand side. On computers use the minimize actions on these blocks to tab them on your screen. On hand held devices these blocks may be visible at the bottom of the course page.
Grades
Assignments and quizzes can all be graded within Moodle. Access them in the Grade block or under 'This Course'. These are not official grades, only a guide for the work you have submitted. Find your official grades in CNC Connect. Each course in Moodle could be graded differently, or not all, and this will be reflected in the grade block.
Calendar
The calendar has several types of activities but it is important to look ahead for crunch times, particularly when tests and assignment deadlines are coming. The icons on the calendar activities show what type they are, assignments (a hand-in date) or meeting.
If you use a different calendar app to organize your life and study you can export a static version of the calendar from Moodle. Remember that changes in the Moodle calendar throughout the year will not be reflected in this export, for example, a deadline is changed or a meeting is added.
