Kerry Thomas came fresh out of high school during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, throwing a wrench in his plans to go into the workforce. As Kerry was figuring out his Plan B, the idea for academic upgrading came up as a way to prepare for employment.

Hi Kerry! What motivated you to enroll in the Academic Upgrading (ACDU) program at CNC?

The pandemic kind of ruined my initial plans to go to work right after high school. As I was looking for options to pursue post-secondary education instead, the Natural Resources and Forest Technology program sparked my interest. In order to meet the entry requirements of the program, I needed to upgrade my STEM and English grades.

What valuable skills or knowledge have you gained from the program so far?

I’ve definitely learned a bunch these past two years, both in and outside of the classroom. I completed the lab-focused Biology course and I’m almost done with English. From there, I’ll have to focus on my math.

I also found the time to take some jobs here and there, and got to participate in photoshoots for promotion of CNC, which was really cool.

Many ACDU students combine their study with family, work or personal commitments. How has the support from CNC instructors and staff been?

The balance is a hard thing to achieve when there's stuff going on with your family, and you’re also trying to study and complete your schoolwork.

Over time, you get to know the ACDU instructors on a more personal level, which is nice. I’ve often visited the Learning Commons and Academic Success Centre to get tutoring support, study and write tests. I also made frequent visits to the Aboriginal Resource Centre on campus for my studies.

Has there been a moment or achievement during your time in the ACDU program or at CNC that you’re particularly proud of?

I’m part of the Indigenous Collective at CNC. It’s a student group where we share Indigenous cultures and practices with each other and fellow students. I remember when we held a Bannock sale and there were so many students coming to our booth to try Bannock for the first time. That opens your eyes to how big the world actually is.

What advice do you have for people who are considering enrolling in the Academic Upgrading program at CNC?

Just do it! If academic upgrading is something you have wanted to do, don’t overthink it. I would also advise to focus on one thing at a time as you’re completing your upgrading. Try not to rush it; take your time.

You can use Academic Upgrading courses at CNC to obtain your BC Adult Graduation Diploma, acquire the prerequisites for other college programs and courses, and meet your career goals.
