Hi Michael! What motivated you to enroll in the Academic Upgrading (ACDU) program? And what did you do before attending CNC?
Back in 2015, I started talking with my family about having my own business. I went to the band office in Prince Rupert to see how I could get a business loan. While there —as if it was supposed to be—I ran into someone who was teaching an eight-week entrepreneurship program.
This got me thinking about continuing my education to become a motorcycle technician and small engine mechanic. To meet the entrance requirements for BCIT in Vancouver, I decided to move to Prince George to get into academic upgrading.
What valuable skills or knowledge have you gained from the program so far?
English taught me how to write and communicate effectively, and math gave me insights into algebra and business. After my first eight months at CNC, I joined the Student Union where I now work part-time as Upgrading and Access Representative and Secretary Treasurer.
I spend a lot of time supporting students in their journey at CNC and teach them how to have a healthy balance between their studies and other responsibilities. That looks different for every student. Sometimes we do meditations or a prayer, other times I’m helping them to catch up on homework or talk to their instructors.
“I pretty much know all the staff and faculty by name. Every single person at CNC has a place in my life. They have encouraged and inspired me to keep going, remain positive and lift others up.”
Can you share a specific moment or achievement during your time in the program that you’re particularly proud of?
I remember two students that were at the point of quitting their studies. I asked them if I could have a moment to talk with them about their decision. It was only a three-minute conversation, but I was able to help them refocus their energy towards the great things they’ve been doing for their studies.
After that, I helped them get back on track with their schoolwork and guess what? Both persons eventually got an A in their courses! That made me feel that the work that I’m doing in supporting peoples’ success is meaningful.
How has the ACDU program helped you move closer to achieving your personal, educational, or career goals?
While I still want to have my own business, I’ve noticed throughout my time at CNC and as a mature student that I can put my life skills to good use for people around me. I have tons of experience with trauma counseling, mental health and men’s health awareness.
I’m currently exploring becoming an addictions counselor as I have a lot to give back to the community. That will probably mean I’ll do another two or three years of college or university life with a focus on psychology or social services.
