As CNC’s 53rd academic year gets underway, students like Clarence Bo and Hana Hoang are gearing up to succeed in their education and eventual careers.
CNC will launch its annual orientation events beginning on Tuesday September 6th. The activities will build community and connections while introducing students to services supporting their success.
A student from the Philippines, Clarence has been particularly focused on ensuring his previous training would merge well with his chosen field of study in Canada.
"I studied physiotherapy in my home country, and enrolled in the kinesiology program at CNC,” explained Clarence, who now chairs the CNC Students’ Union. “I have relied on my academic advisors and instructors to help draw upon my Philippines’ studies and apply that experience to my new program. I intend to work as a physiotherapy assistant and then work toward becoming a registered physiotherapist. I’ve been amazed at the quality of experience and education that the instructors in my program have to offer, and how focused they’ve been on my success and that of my classmates."
High-quality academic programs along with supportive services are key to students completing their educational goals and succeeding in their careers. CNC’s official welcome back and orientation activities will bring students, faculty, and staff together to start the academic year with excitement and encouragement.
Orientation activities in the weeks ahead will help students learn about the range of services the college and partners offer. These include but are not limited to:
- Peer connections, linking first year students with second year peers to ease the transition into college;
- Academic advising to support students in their education journey, and career readiness programming to help students get their best start in the workforce;
- Programs supporting Indigenous students such as Aboriginal resource centres and the Nahoonai-a Indigenous student housing building;
- Offerings for international students including welcoming them to Canada and northern BC; and
- Mental health and wellbeing programs to help students in wellness, resilience, and overcoming challenges.
The new academic year and orientation give students a great opportunity to get to know their new surroundings, build community, and get excited about the paths ahead,” said Dr. Dennis Johnson, president and CEO. “We also we want students to know how dedicated the college community is to their success. We have instructors working to provide the best possible training for students, and service areas giving students the tools they need to succeed in and enjoy their college experience.
Students like second year human resources student Hana Hoang note many people benefit from direct interaction with CNC services to support their transition to college life. Supports through the CNC Students’ Union also help to build community.
"Many students have needs and at times those require extra support. It definitely helps to know who you can talk to,” said Hana. “The students’ union helps in organizing events, clubs, and discussion forums so students can learn from and grow with each other."
CNC is beginning the new academic year with programs spanning six campuses in North-Central BC. Students are focusing their studies in four schools including access and continuing education; health sciences; humanities, university studies, and business; as well as trades and technology. Students in several trades and health sciences programs began their studies in August, with most students starting classes in September. College administration will provide fall 2022 enrolment data to the Board of Governors in late September.
