Event Description

Tuesday, May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigneous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTGI+People , also called Red Dress Day. This day honours victims, supports families, and calls for action on the high rates of violence against Indigenous people.

For this event, please meet near the Brink Trades Building along 18th Avenue and Central Street. From there you will walk along the tree line tying red Tabacco ties, each placed with intention to honour the Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTGI+ People.

The walk will end at 22nd Avenue and Central Street there will be presentations from various speakers discussing the significance of this day. The event will end with a closing song.

The ties will stay up until Monday, May 11th. After the ties have been removed there will be a ceremonial fire to burn them. The action of burning the ties creates the smoke that is needed for the prayers to reach the creator.
