Pidherny Wildfire Risk Reduction Species Conversion & Monitoring

As requested by the BC Ministry of Forests, CNC is contributing to the mission of the Canada Wildfire partnership to undertake priority research in vegetation fire management. It is critical that forestry practitioners understand how to continuously steward forest ecosystems, within urban interfaces, to significantly lessen the likelihood of severe, out-of-control forest fires. CNC is engaged in a multi-year assessment of the wildfire hazard reduction treatment applied within the Pidherny Recreation Area in the City of Prince George.

Wild Fire Risk

Research objective:

CNC researchers are investigating the effectiveness of stand thinning treatments in significantly reducing wildfire hazard indices within a high-use recreational area within the City.  The project is also examining the recruitment of deciduous species post-thinning.  The BC ministry of forests is the primary funder via the Canada Wildfire program, and Omineca regional staff are supporting this work through planting and climate monitoring activities.

Start date – end date: May 2024 – April 2027

Funders: Canada Wildfire via University of Alberta
