CNC Welcomes Swiss Delegation for Trades Exchange and Partnership Exploration

The College of New Caledonia (CNC) was pleased to welcome a delegation from Switzerland’s Goldau Vocational Training Centre (BBZG) this week for a multi-day exchange focused on trades education, teaching practices, and industry partnerships.

Bringing together instructors, program leaders, and international representatives, the visit created space to share knowledge between Switzerland’s dual vocational education model and British Columbia’s apprenticeship system, guided by SkilledTradesBC.

Visiting from Switzerland were Stephan Romer, Member of the School of Management and Head of Construction Trades at BBZG, Mario Dinger, teacher of Civil Engineering Drafting, Sara Marty, Coordinator for Internships Abroad and International Relations Officer, and Beat Suter, instructor in electrical professions.

The delegation began their visit at CNC’s Prince George campus with an overview of trades programming and its alignment with regional labour market needs. This included discussions on foundational training, apprenticeship pathways, and progression toward Red Seal certification. A reciprocal presentation from BBZG provided insight into their approach to vocational education, followed by tours of CNC’s trades facilities.

Over the next two days, visitors participated in classroom observations across automotive, carpentry, electrical, and civil engineering programs, where instructors highlighted hands-on teaching approaches and student projects. The group also visited the Aboriginal Resource Centre, where they were welcomed by Dr. Jessie King and Elder Darlene McIntosh, and learned more about Indigenous culture and the supports CNC provides to Indigenous learners.

Industry engagement was a key component of the visit, with delegation members meeting local partners to better understand workforce needs in Northern B.C. The experience also included a community connection at a Prince George Cougars hockey game.

“We are very impressed with the College, how professional everything is and how thoughtfully programs are delivered,” said Stephan Romer, Member of the School of Management and Head of Construction Trades at BBZG. “You have strong areas of specialization, and we are especially appreciative of how you honour Indigenous history and culture. It has been an inspiring experience.”

“This visit has been a wonderful opportunity to showcase the strength of trades education at CNC and the important role we play in supporting communities across Northern B.C.,” said Anne Harris, Associate Director, International & Student Services. “What has stood out most is the shared commitment to hands-on, applied learning and strong industry connections.”

The delegation will continue their visit with a trip to CNC’s Quesnel campus, highlighting the College’s regional reach and the delivery of trades programming in smaller communities. The visit will include an overview of local industry partnerships and the role CNC plays in supporting rural workforce development.

This international exchange marks an important step in building relationships that support innovation, knowledge sharing, and future opportunities for students and educators alike.
