The College campus is open to the public and we see many different visitors come onsite. With all of the electronics that today’s students possess (laptops, cellphones, etc.) they offer great temptation, both for premeditated crimes and casual, opportunistic theft. CNC has had several thefts reported over time, many of which could have been easily prevented.
What you need to know:
- Valuable items left unattended or in view get stolen or go “missing”.
- Unauthorized individuals gain access to unlocked office spaces, classrooms, or vehicles.
- Potential for escalated crime or violence to occur when a thief is confronted.
What you can do:
Thieves are generally opportunistic and will look for valuables they can simply take with them as they pass by. The majority of thefts that have been reported on campus could have been easily avoided if the following actions were taken:
- Never leave items unattended, not even for just a “short period”. Take the items with you or ask a trusted friend to watch them for you.
- Always ensure offices, classrooms, and/or vehicles are locked when you leave.
- Keep valuables out of view, either those in your vehicle or next to office/classroom windows. Close window blinds when you’re not in the space.
- Utilize an alarm system to secure areas or vehicles and ensure the alarm is set before leaving.
- Never let anyone borrow your keys and don’t share passwords or lock combinations with anyone.
- Keep areas tidy! Areas that look neglected give the impression that the area isn’t being used or monitored and give potential thieves confidence to enter.
- Create an inventory by making a list of all of your valuable items and their serial numbers and keep it somewhere accessible.
- Stay vigilant, look out for suspicious behavior, and contact CNC security or staff if you see something suspicious or witness a theft. Don’t attempt to engage or apprehend the thief – call CNC Security or RCMP.
CNC Security and staff will leave leaflets behind as a friendly reminder when they come across a “security breach” or something that could have been stolen.
