Footprints in the snow

Although the days are getting longer, we aren’t done with winter yet. That means it is important for all of us to stay vigilant and stay safe on streets, roads, and sidewalks.

Rates of vehicle-pedestrian collisions rise in the winter due to road conditions and darkness. CNC, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Insurance Corporation of British Columbia have tips to improve safety whether you’re driving to campus or making your way on foot.

For pedestrians:

  • Be visible by wearing bright clothing and using reflectors and/or lights;

  • Wear the best footwear possible for the conditions;

  • Walk like a penguin: take short steps, spread your feet out, shuffle along, and keep as much of your body over your feet as you can;

  • Take extra time and be cautious in winter conditions as it takes longer for vehicles to stop;

  • Only cross streets at traffic lights and marked crosswalks. Do not cross in the middle of the street; and

  • Put away your cell phone and pay attention to where you’re going as well as the surface underneath you.

For drivers:

  • Put your cell phone down and watch the road;

  • Look for pedestrians at intersections and cross walks; and

  • Slow down for road conditions especially around school areas. A reminder that College Road (the street that connects 18th and 22nd avenue) has a posted speed limit of 15 kilometers an hour.

If you see a spot on a CNC campus that needs maintenance due to snow and ice, please tell a staff member as soon as you can.

Thank you for your extra effort to support road safety in the winter.
