The College of New Caledonia has put a transition plan in place as Dr. Dennis Johnson retires as president and CEO at the end of 2023. Dr. Johnson provided his retirement notice to the college’s board of directors at a special meeting.
“It’s important for me that our work to help students achieve their goals continues as this change happens,” said Dr. Johnson. “This decision comes after significant reflection but my wife and I believe it is the right time for us to focus on family, adventures, and new challenges.”
“My experience as the president of CNC has been the fulfillment of a career in post-secondary education that started as a one- term faculty contract 33 years ago. It has been my honour to lead CNC since 2019. I will leave at the end of this year knowing that the work we have done together has helped CNC to better meet students’ needs now and into the future.”
CNC’s board of directors received Dr. Johnson’s notice of retirement and provided thanks for his service to the college.
“We’re happy to have Dr. Johnson’s leadership for the rest of this year. We are grateful for the experience and new initiatives he has brought to CNC and thank him for his contributions,” said Shobha Sharma, chair of CNC’s board of directors. “We look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Johnson in the year ahead on important initiatives for students and the college community. A new president will also offer an opportunity for further growth.”
Dr. Johnson joined CNC in October 2019 after a career as an instructor, program coordinator, dean, and vice president in post-secondary institutions across three provinces.
During Dr. Johnson’s service at CNC, the college has launched a new strategic plan based on strong community engagement, focused on continuity of service during the COVID-19 pandemic, and started new initiatives to support student engagement and success.
“Through all of these initiatives, CNC faculty and employees have diligently put students first, enthusiastically worked in new ways, and supported the communities we serve,” added Dr. Johnson. “I’m grateful for their efforts, which all contribute to CNC’s vision of learning together, changing lives, and creating futures. I expect that 2023 will be a successful year that includes significant progress towards our goals.”
The CNC board will begin its search process. The college anticipates appointing a new president and CEO early in 2024.
