If the daunting “check engine” light has shown up on your dashboard in time for the holidays, CNC’s Automotive Service Technician (AST) program can help. As the semester ends, students are completing their final exams and assignments, and for students in the AST 3 program, this means getting hands-on with vehicle repairs.

Next week only, the AST program is looking to the Prince George community to bring vehicles with lit “check engine” indicators for diagnosis and repairs. The program will be accepting these vehicles Monday, December 12 to Thursday, December 15 from 8am until 2:30pm.

“This is a great opportunity for vehicle owners to get their cars fixed properly at a much lower cost while also supporting the next generation of technicians,” explained instructor, Ken Rowell. “AST 3 students are in the final week of their course, and this is when they can put all their knowledge together and do some real-world diagnosis work. These are the same people who’ll be caring for your cars in local shops in just a few months.”

Vehicles will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis until the six spots are filled. Although there is a cap on this specific opportunity, the department is looking for other vehicles to repair through April 2023 for the foundation program.

“Our foundations classes are always looking for vehicles that need basic repairs like brakes steering, suspension, maintenance, electrical, etc. We’ll take as many cars as possible,” said Rowell. “All repairs start with diagnosis or inspection, then the owner is given a list of needs and they can decide what they’d like to have fixed.”

Most repairs will be completed within the allotted class time, but it is important to note that repairs can sometimes take longer, as this is a school program and not an established auto service shop. Vehicle owners will be responsible for any parts costs required for the repair.
