Lisa Hart (BSc, BEd, MSc) teaches chemistry and math at CNC.
"My passion for chemistry shows up everywhere in my life,” Lisa Hart says. “It's in my vintage chemical glassware collection, on blankets with chemical reaction patterns and the periodic table, and in the art on my walls. I even have science-y clothing. You name it, I probably have some chemistry-themed version."
What do your students tell you about their experience at CNC Quesnel?
Students who visit again after completing a degree program say the skills and lab procedures they learned here gave them excellent preparation for the rest of their studies. The most common feedback students share with me about CNC Quesnel is how much our small classes benefit them. They receive the help they need from instructors. They tell me their college experience feels very personal and community-focused.
What inspired you to become an instructor?
I was an elementary school teacher and taught students from kindergarten to grade 12. After I moved to Quesnel, I met adults who wanted to upgrade their skills. I took academic upgrading when I started college, and it was overwhelming. My experience made me want to help adults reach their goals, because I know it can be hard to return to school. I thought my background as an elementary teacher could help with that transition.
What is most rewarding for you about being an instructor?
It’s very rewarding when students share their dreams with me. They may want to simply earn a credential or pursue a degree and research Alzheimer's disease to help their grandparent. I can help them achieve these goals. I am always honoured to play a small role. There is no better feeling than seeing a student persevere to reach the success they want.
What advice do you have for students considering academic upgrading?
I believe all students can achieve what they set out to do. The same goal may look different for everyone, but if a student wants something, they can achieve it using small, intentional steps.
Lisa Hart has been an instructor with CNC Quesnel since 2017. She is from Vancouver Island.
