Jennifer Catherall (MSc, RPF) teaches biology at CNC.

"Seeing students’ faces light up when concepts become clear is exciting. I first experienced this when I worked as a Teaching Assistant. I knew then that I would one day love to be an instructor," says Catherall.

What you may not know about our campus: Our local campus is a gateway to achieving your higher education goals, such a Bachelor's degree. You can complete all of your First Year science requirements in face-to-face classes that transfer to almost all universities. You get one-on-one attention and help without having to compete for your instructor's time. Taking First Year university locally will not only save you money, it will set you on the road to success!

What inspires you about instructing? Helping students reach their goals! I also get inspired when I hear positive feedback from former students. When they reach out and tell me that a course has made an impact in their lives, or a lecture has helped them in their further studies, I feel I am doing the work that I am supposed to do.

What advice do you have for students considering their next academic steps? I believe that all students can succeed if realistic goals are set. Sometimes it takes reaching many small goals over time to get where you want to be. Don't set the bar so high that it seems unattainable or you get discouraged if you have setbacks. If you want to start university or a trade after being away from school for a while, start with a few upgrading or university courses. Get used to being a student again, and celebrate your successes. You’ll earn credits and will also be better prepared for your future studies. When she’s not teaching, Jen can be found looking for fungi in a forest, exploring her new passion, paddleboarding, or cultivating hardy roses in her garden.
