A series of free industry certification courses will take place at five College of New Caledonia (CNC) campuses during Coastal GasLink Safety Week running March 14 to 20.
Over the course of the week, students in Prince George, Vanderhoof, Mackenzie, Fort. St. James and Burns Lake can learn a range of skills and receive industry certified safety tickets supporting the in-demand needs of the current labour market.
Course offerings include Fall Protection, Ground Disturbance, Hazard Assessment, Occupational First Aid Level 1, Rigging and Hoisting, Pipeline Construction Safety Training, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Wilderness and Bear Awareness, and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).
“Coastal GasLink is committed to leaving a legacy for decades to come through skills development with our project. We have invested in skills development and long-term education programs to support Indigenous and local residents since project planning started and we are proud to partner again with the College of New Caledonia to offer additional industry courses and safety tickets,” shares Kiel Giddens, Public Affairs Manager, Coastal GasLink.
Coastal GasLink Safety Week is part of a recent $150,000 investment from TC Energy’s Coastal GasLink Project. Part of the investment is supporting the success of CNC trades and technologies students with awards. Another portion is funding the safety week to support learners in area communities.
Since 2015, Coastal GasLink has provided gifts totaling $400,000 to support CNC students through:
- The Pathway to Pipeline: CNC Skills Fund Bursaries;
- Free certification training during safety week events; and
- New equipment to enhance training opportunities in heavy mechanical, welding, metal fabrication, power engineering, professional cook, electrical, and carpentry.
“We appreciate Coastal GasLink’s continued support of CNC students and the ever-increasing need in northern B.C. for skilled workers,” said Dr. Chad Thompson, CNC Vice President - Academic. “Safety is a top priority of any shop or jobsite. Anyone taking part in these free industry certifications available during Coastal GasLink Safety Week will not only increase their employability but ensure they can perform their work safely.”
Coastal GasLink Safety Week is open to CNC students and members of the public. Space is limited, so timely registration is encouraged. For a full schedule of courses and to register, visit https://cnc.bc.ca/cgl.
Courses will be delivered through a combination of in-person and online training. All in-person courses will operate using CNC’s COVID-19 safety plan and return-to-campus guidelines from the BC Government to support the health and safety of all participants.
