Black History Month

The College of New Caledonia (CNC) and Prince George African Heritage Society (PGAHS) are celebrating Black History Month throughout February with an indoor soccer tournament and Afro Fusion Cuisine Dinner, Dance, and Entertainment event.

The celebration, now in its 23rd year at CNC, has become a longstanding cultural tradition in the community. Last year, CNC and PGAHS’ Black History Month celebration raised $5,000 for the CNC
Black History Committee Endowment Bursary.

“Black History Month is a time to reflect upon, learn from, and honour the past,” said CNC instructor and Black History Committee member Cliff Raphael. “But it’s also a time to celebrate the future. The Black History Committee Endowment Bursary helps make school more affordable for those who are building their futures at CNC.”

The 2020 Black History Month Indoor Soccer Tournament kicks off Feb. 15th and 16th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in CNC’s gymnasium. Teams are competing for cash prizes with $500 for first place, $300 for
second, and $200 for third.

Black History Month celebrations continue on Feb. 22 with an Afro Fusion Cuisine Dinner, Dance, and Entertainment event hosted at CNC. The event kicks off with appetizers and drinks at 5:30 p.m.,
dinner at 6 p.m. followed by entertainment, presentations and a dance.

Tickets for the event are $25 for ages 13 and older, $10, for ages seven to 12, and free for children six and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the CNC Bookstore, UNBC Bookstore, Books and
Company, and at the door if available.

“CNC is a proud supporter of the Black History Month celebrations,” said CNC President Dr. Dennis Johnson. “For more than two decades, these celebrations have brought people to CNC in celebration of both culture and community.”

In honour of Black History Month, CNC has a display of traditional African history and culture up in the library.
