Shanice Moizo’s stable, fulfilling carpentry career has progressed quickly. She loves her work, and she’s helping to meet the skilled trades shortage in BC. What does she enjoy about the job? “In residential construction, you get to do a bit of everything – we are well-rounded Carpenters. I enjoy learning new skills, and every day is different.”
Once Moizo finished the Carpenter Foundation program and was working, she found that “Everything made more sense because we are applying our skills to real tasks. It’s eye-opening to be using what we learned to build lasting structures.” She adds, “I have enjoyed learning how to work faster as I gain experience.”
In Moizo’s work for ICON Homes, her team builds all aspects of new construction: footings, foundations, frames, floor joists, sheeting, and walls. They also stand trusses, sheet roofs, and apply siding and shingles. She’s grateful for the opportunity to work with this Quesnel company.
Her employer, Joe Hart, appreciates having her on the team. He said, “Shanice is an awesome employee. She’s super-pleasant - everyone likes working with her. She works hard.” He added, “It’s great to see more women in the field. It’s vital that women become tradespeople – they are the great untapped resource. We definitely need more female Carpenters. This industry is becoming a better place for everyone - I don’t see as many of the issues that I used to see in the workplace.”
Moizo chose Carpentry because “I wanted to have a solid trade. Since construction is always ongoing, there should be steady work in the future.” The construction industry is actively seeking more workers – BC alone needs 5,000 more Carpenters in the next decade. If you are creative and detail-oriented, Carpenter Foundation may be a great fit for you.
