English Language Proficiency Requirements

Approved English-Speaking Countries

• Canadian High School Grades

  • English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 (minimum “C” grade), or equivalent 

• Testing Options

  Test scores are valid for 2 years from the date the test was written and must be valid through the first day of classes. 

  • Student Readiness Assessment (SRA): For domestic applicants only: Reading score of 250, Writing score of 250, WritePlacer score of 5 

  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEl): Overall of 60+ with no subtest below 60 

  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Indes Program (CELPIP) General: No section less than a 7 

  • Duolingo English Test: Overall score of 115 

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6 

  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic): Overall score of 59 with no section less than 55 

  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT): Overall score of 4.0 with no section less than 4.0; or equivalent.  

• Course Options

  • English Language Program: Level IV – English for Academic Purposes from a BC Institution or completion of the English Language EAP 3 Level at CNC.  

  • A 3-credit post-secondary-level English, Communications, Creative Writing, or Literature courses with a minimum “C” grade, taken at a post-secondary institution located on the approved English-speaking country list.  

  • Successful completion of an Adult Upgrading English Course taken at the Provincial Level. 

  • GCSE/IGCSE English courses: Minimum final grade of “C” in GCE/IGCSE Ordinary Level English.  

• Institutional Options

  • Provide evidence of three years of full-time English instruction in an approved English-speaking country, along with proof of completion of Grade 12 English (or higher) with a minimum “C” grade. 

  • Completion of a minimum 2-year credential from a post-secondary institution listed on the approved English-speaking country list.  

• Approved English-Speaking Countries

  Applicants may be exempt if they have successfully completed three consecutive full-time years of secondary school and/or post-secondary education taught in a country where English is the principal language, as listed below:
