Darby Madill finds rewarding apprenticeship after starting Carpenter training

Carpentry “is a great skill to have … and there was much more to it than I realized. There was a lot to learn,” said former CNC Quesnel student Darby Madill. He found a rewarding apprenticeship position shortly after completing the Foundation Carpenter Program at CNC Quesnel. “When I was looking for an apprenticeship, I didn’t have much trouble finding work. There are jobs for those who want to work in Carpentry.”

Before enrolling in the program, Madill didn’t know much about the wide variety of opportunities the field offered. Now that he’s seen the range of different paths for Carpenters, he looks forward to exploring many aspects of the industry, such as working on bridges and in larger-scale construction projects.

Carpenters are the largest group of skilled workers in Canada, and are the third most in-demand trades career in BC. We will need more than 5,200 carpenters in the next 10 years. It may be an excellent choice for you if you are creative, precise, and accurate in your work, have an eye for detail, and are seeking steady future employment.

Apply today for the Carpenter Foundation program that starts in February. This program delivers a comprehensive overview of the Carpentry field. Students don’t require an apprentice sponsor to complete this course. Afterwards, they do need to obtain an apprenticeship to move ahead. We offer Carpenter Levels 2, 3, and 4 in Quesnel. Students who complete Foundation in early 2022 and earn enough apprenticeship hours can return in the Fall for Level 2, which includes a deeper dive into building science.

Today, Madill is employed with Bulldog Construction, plays on the Quesnel Kangaroos of the Central Interior Hockey league, and coaches teens in the Quesnel Minor Hockey league in his spare time. He encourages others to consider Carpentry; he says, “I’m enjoying this career and I’m glad I chose to start my education in Quesnel.”
