COVID emergency student financial aid - a lifeline in tough times

Students at CNC have options if their finances have become unusually tight due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government of British Columbia has provided funding to institutions across the province including CNC to help students cope with the financial pressures caused by COVID-19.

The Financial Aid & Awards department has put together these handy lists to help students fill out their applications…

Eligibility

Eligible students include:

  • Those in full-time, part-time, or adult upgrading (minimum two courses); and
  • Canadian citizens who have lived in BC continuously for at least 12 months (excluding their time in post-secondary learning).
  • Students must experience some type of unexpected or unforeseen financial hardship related to the pandemic, such as job loss, reduction of hours, or disruption of childcare.
  • The grants cover students attending CNC Intersession 2021, Fall 2021, Spring 2022 semesters (or current Trades Foundations level program).
  • CNC will disburse/pay the approved funds after Add/Drop date of the semester.
  • Students do not have to repay the grants. Grants are limited to one disbursement/payment per student per academic year.

Expenses generally covered include (but are not limited to)

  • Emergency housing expenses;
  • Temporary food insecurity;
  • Essential utilities (such as electric, gas, water);
  • Emergency medical treatment/medication/prescriptions when you do not have the ability to pay and the costs cannot be covered by insurance; and/or
  • Other academic needs related to the switch to online learning (such as a laptop computer or, internet fees).

Expenses generally not covered include (but are not limited to)

  • Tuition and student fees;
  • Expenses due to a lack of financial planning or overspending;
  • Health insurance;
  • Outstanding debt to the university or otherwise (i.e. credit cards, fees past due, etc.);
  • Continuous fixed expenses (such as a phone bill);
  • Non-essential utilities (such as cable);
  • Costs of entertainment, recreation, or non-emergency travel; and/or
  • Parking tickets.

For international students

The COVID-19 Emergency Fund offered through CNCSU in collaboration with CNC is available to provide one-time financial assistance to our international members here in Canada.

 If you are facing unexpected financial distress as a result of being laid off work or having hours reduced due to the pandemic, you may apply for this fund by filling out this application form below.

Please email the completed form to aid@cncsu.ca, and expect a few days for processing due to high volumes. We may contact you for further information before approval. If approved, a cheque will be sent via mail to the provided address.
