Career Technical Centre (CTC)

The Career Technical Centre program is a partnership between School District 57 and the College of New Caledonia. This partnership allows SD57 high school students to have a unique opportunity to take their first year of trades training at CNC while earning dual credits, graduating ready to enter the workforce as an apprentice.  

The Career Technical Centre, or CTC program, allows high school students to graduate with their first year of hands-on, technical trades training already completed. This earns students a certificate in various trades.

 CTC Foundation Programs

Students can choose from a wide variety of trades including automotive service technician, auto service technician, carpentry, electrical, heavy mechanical trades, pipe trades, professional cook, and welding.

Who is Eligible for CTC Foundation Programs?

CTC programs are open to students entering Grade 12 who meet the following requirements: 

  1. From School District 57 (Prince George)
  2. “C+” average or higher in Grade 11
  3. Satisfactory work habits and good attendance records 

 How to apply?

Step 1: Complete a CTC Application for Admission Package, available from school counsellors, school work experience coordinators, or the Trades office at CNC.

Step 2: Submit the completed forms to your career preparation coordinator or school counsellor, or directly to the Trades office at CNC.

How does CTC differ from Dual Credit?

CTC is a form of dual credit that allows school district 57 students to complete their first year of technical trades training and earn credit towards their high school graduation. Dual credit is for high school students to get a head start in their academic post-secondary journey, and it provides students with post-secondary credits in various academic courses.

Additional Information

SD57 Non-Instructional Days (NID) are not observed at CNC. Students are expected to attend CNC classes as scheduled.

Tuition is Free for CTC Foundation Students (a value of $3,000 - $4,000) 

The application fee, student fees, books and supplies are the responsibility of the student

CTC Tours

Tours of CTC are every Friday at 10:00am.

 CTC Youth Explorer Trades Sampler (Trades Discovery)

For students interested in trades but unsure of which one to pursue, the Youth Explorer Trades Sampler Program is open to students in Grades 10-12. This program provides an opportunity for students to try 4 different trades. This can help a student to narrow down an interest and get experience in a variety of trades. Tuition and student fees are free for the Youth Explore Trades Sampler Program (Trades Discovery). Students are responsible for providing their own personal protective equipment (PPE).

 CTC Journey

 Step 1. Apply to CTC Program

Complete the CTC Application and submit.

Please include:

  • Application for Admission
  • Statement of Interest
  • Teacher Reference
  • Administrator Reference
  • Resume
  • Report Card

 Step 2. Interview

If selected, you will receive an email with your interview date/time. The coordinator will meet with the student and parents. The interview is usually held through Microsoft Teams. A link will be emailed once you confirm.

 Step 3. Accepted to the CTC Program

The student and parents read, sign and return acceptance package.

 Step 4. Apply to CNC

You'll receive an email with instructions on when to apply to CNC. This gets you registered in the program. A $40 application fee is due at that time. Note that the application window is short, please apply within the timeframe given.

 Step 5. Setup CNC Connect Account

CNC will email the student instructions to set up their CNC Connect Account. Only the student will receive these emails.

 Step 6. Pay CNC Student Fees

CTC students are responsible for paying the student fees for their program by the provided deadline. You do not have to pay tuition. Youth Explore Trades Sampler students are exempt from fees and will not be required to pay.

 Step 7. Class Begins

Arrive for your first day of class. You will be informed of your classroom number and what to bring before your first day of class.

CTC Reporting Codes 

    The CTC Program is dual-credit, which means the credits that students earn at CNC translate into high school credits. The below document is for counsellors and school systems admins to reference when entering grades.  

    SkilledTradesBC

    SkilledTradesBC (STBC) is the provincial organization that coordinates British Columbia's skilled trades system. The SkilledTradesBC website is a great resource for trades program outlines, apprenticeship registration, and accessing your trades transcript.

    Working as a student

    Remember, we need a journey persons name, TQ number and signature to report the hours to SkilledTradesBC. We will not accept your work based training forms without this information. If you or your employer have any questions regarding this form please don't hesitate to contact the CTC office and we'll be happy to explain the process.

     

    SkilledTradesBC Cards

    If you lost your SkilledTradesBC registration cards you must fill out a SkilledTradesBC replacement form and submit it to SkilledTradesBC with payment. The CTC office will have your SkilledTradesBC number on file. When CTC students with SkilledTradesBC registration cards find an employer or change employers they must provide SkilledTradesBC with the name of their new employer and submit the appropriate SkilledTradesBC form.

    College Certificate

    On completion of Grade 12 you will receive credit for your program at CNC.

    Continuing your Apprenticeship

    If you wish to continue your apprenticeship, the first thing to do is find an employer willing to sponsor you. They must register as your sponsor with SkilledTradesBC using the Apprentice and Sponsor Registration Form. To register for your next levels at the College of New Caledonia, you must submit a NEW CNC APPLICATION. Visit the CNC Trades Website to learn more.

    CTC Tours

    Do you ever wonder what the Trades experience is like? Come join us for a tour of what CNC has to offer.

    Our Coordinator, Doug Borden, provides tours every Friday at 10:00am. Please text us at 250-613-8598 or email us at ctc@cnc.bc.ca to let us know if you would like to join a tour and if so, which Friday will work for you. If you are unable to attend on a Friday, please let us know and we can see if other accommodations can be arranged.

     Please note that we require an adult to be present with the student for all tours.  

     We will provide safety glasses for visiting the shops, we ask that you make sure you are all wearing closed-toed shoes for the tour.  

     We look forward to meeting with you to show you our trades buildings and discuss our programs at CNC. This is a great opportunity to answer any questions you may have.
