What started as a quick, hand-drawn solution to a missing movie poster has turned into an
unexpected viral moment for College of New Caledonia (CNC) student Drake Landon.
The 19-year-old Prince George resident works at Cineplex and is heading into his second
year of CNC’s Web and Graphic Design diploma program. When an official Spider-Man
poster hadn’t arrived at the theatre, Landon decided to make one himself.
“I’m a big Marvel fan, so I just drew it,” Landon said.

The handmade poster, with its intentionally simple style and nod to a familiar internet
meme, quickly started getting attention from moviegoers. But Landon didn’t realize just
how far it had travelled until about a week later.
“First it was locally popular about six days after I drew it,” he said. “Then the next day, I saw
it on Reddit on the Marvel Studios subreddit with 30,000 upvotes. It felt crazy!”
Among the reactions was one fan who said he was excited to hear the poster had been put
back up at the theatre and planned to make a “pilgrimage” to Prince George to see it.
Landon thinks the poster connected with people precisely because it wasn’t polished or
complicated.
“It brought back an old meme that people connected with, and it was simple and funny,” he
said.
Many of the online comments also celebrated the fact that the poster had been created by
hand rather than generated using artificial intelligence, something that resonates with
Landon as an aspiring artist and designer.
“It makes me happy because AI is uncreative and a way for companies to mass produce,”
he said. “It is killing artists and creative minds.”
For Landon, creating art isn’t just something he does at work. It’s where he hopes his career
will take him.
Born and raised in Prince George, he chose CNC’s Web and Graphic Design program
because it allowed him to begin building the skills for the career he wants without having to
leave his hometown.
“I want to be a 3D modeler or concept artist, and it allowed me to stay in Prince George,” he
said.
As he prepares to begin his second year, Landon said he has particularly enjoyed the
artistic and graphic design components of the program. His favourite course so far has
been Introduction to Digital Arts and Media, and he is looking forward to returning for the
new semester.
He is also considering continuing his studies in Fine Arts after completing his diploma.
Ultimately, Landon hopes to take his creativity from Prince George to the movie or video
game industry, working for a development studio as a 3D modeler or concept artist.
And the poster that unexpectedly introduced his work to thousands of people online?
It’s safe at home.
“We’ll be putting it in a frame,” Landon said. “I’ll be keeping it for now.”
