CNC’s first Devant ambassador helps students and alumni building their careers in Canada

by Jessie (scheelej1) | Dec 17, 2024
Holiness Duodu is a first-year international student at CNC’s Tourism & Hotel Management post-diploma program in Prince George. He recently got selected to join Devant’s ambassador program to help CNC students and alumni find work and succeed in Canada.
Career planning and exploration is an important part of the student experience at CNC. Our Career Services team helps students to plan for their educational goals and find career options that are best suited to their skills, values, abilities and interests.

CNC works together with the Devant Group to give our students access to a broad range of career tools for free. Holiness Duodu was recently selected to join Devant’s ambassador program. We sat down with him to learn more about how he’s using Devant for his own career growth.

Hi Holiness! Tell us a little more about yourself.

“I’m a first-year student here at CNC. I’ve lived, studied and worked in Ghana for most of my life but I also love traveling around the world: the United States, United Kingdom and parts of Europe. After I completed my bachelor’s degree in fine arts at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, I worked in various positions in the tourism and hospitality sector. I wanted to use my passion and experience in travel to gain more knowledge about the industry. At CNC, I found the perfect program to continue my education.

What got you interested in becoming an ambassador for Devant?

When I applied at CNC, I came across Devant on the website and thought it was a great resource to learn more about the Canadian labour market and plan for my career early on.

When I arrived in Canada, I decided to apply for Devant’s ambassadorship program to develop my workplace skills, build my network, and gain Canadian work experience. Then, one day, I got an email from Devant telling me that I was chosen as an ambassador!

Congrats! What will you be doing as an ambassador?

I’ll be promoting Devant's career development resources to my peers on campus. Devant has a lot of helpful tools to get help with your resume, cover letter and interview preparations. They also host a lot of workshops and courses and can introduce you to employers through their events and job platforms.

I’m also hoping to share my personal experiences with how Devant has helped me find and secure a job.

How have CNC and Devant helped you so far to prepare for your future career?

Back home, how you build your resume is very different than in Canada. Here, you have to be very job specific and highlight your achievements in previous positions. Devant helped me to create a resume that aligns with Canadian standards, learn techniques for interviews, and connect me with recruiters.

CNC has been great when it comes to providing career support and opportunities. The Career Resources help you with everything you need in preparation to find a job and build your career.

As an international student, I really cannot emphasize enough how important it is to make new connections. I understand that can be daunting if you’re new to a country. I got involved with the CNC Student Union – they organize lots of events and activities and it’s a great way to get to know more people, increase your visibility on and around campus, and gain access to student life and work experiences.

Do you already have plans of what you’d like to do after graduating from CNC?

I’d like to gain work experience in the tourism and hospitality industry and eventually get a master’s degree in the same field. I’m particularly interested in sustainable and regenerative tourism. Tourism is greatly affected by climate change and the sector has a lot of potential to make positive contributions to the world around us; economically, socially and environmentally.
