Eighty-seven College of New Caledonia (CNC) students gathered June 18 at the First Mennonite Church in Burns Lake to receive their recognition for graduating from eight diverse programs.
Approximately 350 people witnessed the graduates receive awards in Adult Dogwood, Professional Cook Program, Welding Level C and B, Foundation Carpentry, Aboriginal Community Health Certificate, Health Care Assistant and Developmental Standard Term Certificate. Scholarships and bursaries were also received by 14 participants.
Dignitaries in attendance included the College of New Caledonia (CNC) President, John Bowman; CNC Board of Governors Director and local representative, Bob Murray; MLA , John Rustad; Chief Corrina Leween, Cheslatta Carrier Nation; Lake Babine Nation Councillor, Louise Lacerte, Chief Robbie Skin of the Skin Tyee Nation, Ruby Williams, Wet’suwet’en First Nation, Chief Robert Charlie of Tsil’kaz Koh and Mayor Bernice Magee.
Student speakers were: Professional Cook – Geraldine Charlie; Welding Level C – Jordan Gooding; Foundation Level Carpentry – Tara Quaw; Aboriginal Community Health Certificate - Chereen Patrick; Health Care Assistant - Jennifer Bartel; Developmental Standard Term Certificate - Kelly Tizya.

Lakes District Staff Bursaries
The Lakes District Staff Bursaries are the result of all year fundraising at the Lakes District Campus. Funding comes from the staff holding several fundraisers as well as the vending machine revenue. Bursaries are awarded to those students who demonstrate community spirit by helping out within the community of Burns Lake, as well as the CNC community. This year’s recipients are:
Connie Anderson – Residential Building Maintenance Worker;
Joe Antler – College and Career Preparation;
Deonne Wright – Aboriginal Community Health Program;
Brian Dyck – College and Career Preparation; and
The winner of the Berenice Haggarty Award this year is Collien Flanagan. This award is dedicated to Berenice Haggarty, who is a long time Burns Lake resident, college fundraiser, and was a Board Member of the College in its early days. This recognition is given to a student who demonstrates a commitment to their community in volunteer service. Collien is a graduate of the Health Care Assistant Program.
These students are receiving this Bursary because they have demonstrated good attendance, leadership, community participation, a good attitude, hard work, and have been role models in their community and classroom.
CNC Endowment Bursary
These awards are funded by the CNC Endowment Bursary which is held by the main campus in PG. These bursaries are only available for regional campus students.

Rick Wilsgard Staff Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is presented each year to a Lakes Campus student who has shown initiative in reaching his/her educational goals. These are students who have applied for and been accepted to a full-time certificate, diploma, or degree program of study at any college or university. Applicants are asked to submit an essay with their application in which they have an opportunity to discuss their chosen field of study. Rick Wilsgard was a long-time instructor in the Adult Education Centre in Burns Lake who is retired and living on the Southside of Francois Lake.
This year’s winner has been accepted to the Level 3 Residential Building Maintenance Worker Program at the Lakes District Campus. The winner is Bill Chard.
Wild Rivers Award
The Wild Rivers award is offered each year at the Lakes Campus for student writing which celebrates the natural environment of Lakes District and northern BC.
Awards were already presented to:
First prize was awarded to Bernadette Lacerte;
Phil Patrick won second place; and
Two entries, one by Mildred Joseph and one by Dolores Alfred, tied for third place.
